I hope you all had an amazing holiday break! We've been working hard getting back in the swing of things. Students have done some mid-year assessments and it sure is fun to see their growth! Here are the new topics of study:
Math-division, fact families, and soon, area and perimeter! writing-informational reading-nonfiction text features word study-plurals science-animal habitats, adaptations, life cycles We are working hard in math on learning patterns in facts. Ask your child the strategies they know for solving x0, x1, x2, x5, x9, x10, and x multiples of tens!
In writing, we are working on realistic fiction narratives. Students are learning to create a character, a problem and solution, and determining a central theme for their stories. In reading, we are focusing on traditional literature. We have learned about myths and are currently reading fables! Ask your child some of the lessons they have learned from these stories, or what it means to have the "Golden Touch!" Time flies when you're having fun! We have been working really hard over here in third grade!
Math: We have been beginning our learning of multiplication. Students are learning many strategies for solving. Ask your student to show you how to use an array, repeated addition, equal groups, or to create a table when they solve a given fact. Students also are beginning to look for clue words to help them know if they should be adding, subtracting, or multiplying.
Writing: Students finished publishing their first personal narrative. We are working on drafting our second! Reading: We have been learning how to be digital readers by discussing the difference between reading on a device and on paper. Students have also been working on finding the main idea with supporting details of a text. Word Study: Students will assess on Long O spelling patterns this week and begin long U next week! We will also begin learning various addition and subtraction strategies. Our math workshop centers should be starting as well! In writing workshop, we will be taking one of our stories from their writing notebooks and taking it through the entire writing process. I am excited to watch their stories transform! Hello and welcome to 3rd grade! We are going to have a great year growing together! Here is a bit about myself. This is my 7th year teaching (wow!), and my third year at SCE. I have also taught reading intervention and 3rd grade in Georgia and first grade in Illinois. I went to the University of Dayton and have a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. I grew up in Dublin, live in Dublin, and also attended Scottish Corners as a child! I have been married for five years to my husband, Justin, and we have two kids, Aubrey (2) and Ollie (3 months). I also have a White German Shepherd named Lily. I love DIY house projects, planting flowers, and playing with my kiddos :) This blog, along with our class twitter account, SCE_MrsB, will be the main sources of communication for our classroom. I try to post blog updates every two weeks or so, but be sure to follow us on twitter to see the more day to day happenings in room 214 and within the building! Feel free to comment on our blog, look at it with your child, and talk about what is going on in the classroom. Of course, if there is important information, you can expect a quick email from me as well! Here is a "Get to Know You" Google form for you and your child to fill out leading up to school. It is just a fun way for me to get some quick background knowledge about your kiddo :) |
